HONORED ALUMNI

THE following BYU alumni will receive College Honored Alumni Awards during Homecoming 2009.

Education

Mary Nielsen Cook (BS ’73) served more than 15 years in the education field before being called to the Young Women general presidency in 2007. She was a teacher and administrator in the Jordan School District in Utah, and she taught English as a second language in Mongolia, where she served as a missionary and mission president’s wife.

Engineering and Technology

Past president and CEO of NMB Technologies Corporation, Myron D. Jones (BS ’69) serves on the marketing advisory board for the Marriott School of Management. Before his company suffered a revenue drop of $100 million in 1998, Jones foresaw the crisis and implemented strategies allowing the company to recover the losses within two years.

Family, Home, and Social Sciences

Orrin G. Hatch (BS ’59) has been a U.S. senator representing Utah since 1976. He has served on many committees in the Senate, most notably as the chair of the Labor and Human Resources Committee and chair of the Judiciary Committee.

Fine Arts and Communications

While still earning his graphic design degree at BYU, Parry W. Merkley (BFA ’81) started a design company on the side. Throughout his career he designed for many major companies including Macy’s NY, Estée Lauder, and American Express. He worked as creative director and then president of the advertising agency Doremus and Company before launching a new general advertising agency Merkley+Partners.

Health and Human Performance

Clark T. Thorstenson (BA ’62) founded the therapeutic recreation program at BYU and established the therapeutic recreation licensure with the State of Utah Department of Commerce. He has been a mission president, area missionary, and director of the activity committee for the Church. He also founded the Bonneville Health System.

Humanities

After a long career in philanthropy, Shannon K. Toronto (BA ’88) became the chief operating officer at the Philanthropy Roundtable in Washington, D.C. She also worked as a writing supervisor on a grant proposal between Hill Air Force Base and Boeing, and she helped craft a software program that teaches the essentials of early reading to young students.

Law

Executive director of the Never Again Foundation, R. Keith Perkins (BS ’90) founded the organization to provide free legal services to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. He received the Foundation of Justice Award from the Arizona Bar Association and the Distinguished Service Award from the Arizona Attorney General.

Life Sciences

Craig M. Young (BS ’75) is a professor and director of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. He also directed the Department of Larva Ecology for more than 15 years at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. A re-viewer of many journal manuscripts, he is also a prolific writer with more than 150 papers in refereed journals and books.

Management

Alfred Gantner (MBA ’94) is the cofounder and CEO of Partners Group, an alternative asset managing company. Before establishing Partners Group in Switzerland, he began his career in the securities trade department of the UBS Private Banking Group and worked for Goldman Sachs. He also serves on the Marriott School’s National Advisory Council.

Nursing

Currently the chief nursing officer in the urban south region of Intermountain Healthcare, Ann Carlson Eves (BS ’88) was a nursing di-rector in the region for many years and was also nurse manager at Orem Community Hospital, where she received the Manager of the Year Award. She received the first Manager of Distinction Award for the urban south region.

Physical and Mathematical Sciences

A former math teacher, BYU associate professor of education Steven C. Baugh (BS ’69) serves as director of BYU’s Center for the Improvement of Teacher Education and Schooling. As superintendent in the Alpine School District, he was honored as Utah Superintendent of the Year in 1998 and was inducted into the Utah Educators Hall of Fame in 2000.
