The trek to Etna’s rim requires a tram ride followed by a wild four-wheel-drive minibus trip. At the end of the road the passengers diverge. A crowd of tourists takes the path away from the active cone while the BYU geologists follow their guides up several hundred feet to the barren, gaping summit.
